In recent years, Toyota has included a “Hold” button on most Toyota vehicle models, near the electronic parking brake button. Having helped many new Toyota buyers become familiar with using all of their vehicle features, I’ve noticed it is common, even for previous Toyota owners, to have no idea what the “Hold” button is for. It’s a convenient feature, and this brief article covers how to use it properly.
On Toyota vehicle models with the hold button feature, it will be located as seen in this image of the 2024 Toyota Tacoma center console area, near the electronic parking brake button (labeled “P”).
To activate the brake hold feature via the “hold” button, the vehicle must be turned on, all doors closed, and any occupied seats must have the seat belt fastened. Once these conditions are met, push the hold button. A green indicator matching the icon on the button will appear on the digital dash display in front of the steering wheel.
Once the dash display indicator is visible, the feature is active and can be used for the remainder of the trip, until the vehicle is turned off or the button is pressed again.
What does this feature do?
Once activated, coming to a complete stop activates the brake hold feature, which allows you to remove your foot from the brake pedal (or reduce pressure on it), without concern that the vehicle will roll forward.
This is very convenient at red lights, drive-up ATMs, restaurant drive-thrus, and traffic jams.
When the light turns green or it is time to move forward, tap the gas pedal and the brake hold will automatically release.
It also increases safety, not allowing the vehicle to roll forward due to driver distractions while stopped.
